first edition, 4to (22.2 x 16.6cm), [8], 264, [8] pages, four engraved plates, engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by J.A. Fridrich after G. Eichler, printed ownership label to upper pastedown ("Christian Paurnfeind, Verwalter"), ownership inscription to front free endpaper ("Josef Stecher..."), eighteenth-century calf, lacking errata list and table, thumbed, some light browning and scattered spotting, a few small stains, splitting at upper hinge, lower pastedown scuffed, extremities worn, some slight loss of leather to head of spine; together with: an undated, 1-page autograph note by Toscanini referring to a book by C.S. Forester; an undated typed note in German, bearing a stamp of the 'Präsidialbüro des Landeshauptmannes', stating that 'this book was acquired by the Salzburg Landesregierung from the Stecher family in Salzburg in August 1934'; and a manuscript label in Italian addressed to Toscanini from the 'Capitano provinciale di Salzburg', dated Salzburg, 30 August 1934 (4)

Leopold's seminal treatise on the violin, in a contemporary binding. Together with those by C.P.E. Bach and J.J. Quantz, it is one of the most important musical treatises of the eighteenth century, published in the year of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth.
