Catalogue Note

An attractive autograph musical quotation from one of Brahms's best-loved works the so-called Haydn Variations, based on the St. Anthony chorale for wind instruments - a composition no longer attributed to Haydn. Brahms's virtually simultaneous two versions of the work, one for orchestra (Op.56a) and another for two pianos (Op.56b), both date to 1873.
