Condition

With scattered age and construction cracks, dents and abrasions. Flaming urn and flowering finials with restored breaks. Scattered minor losses and abraisons to carving. Gesso with fine cracks and some losses. Regilt, gilding now with some rubbing and losses. Underside with olde worm damage. Legs previously blocked. In good condition.

A basically identical canapé attributed to Jacob, almost certainly the pair to this lot, was sold Christie's New York, April 26, 1990, lot 160A. A bed with similarly carved crest and legs is in the Musée Nissim de Camondo; see Handbook, Musée Nissim de Camondo, no. 644, p. 111.
