Description

  • Francesco Simonini
  • a cavalry column; a cavalry skirmish
  • A pair, both oil on canvas, in fine Venetian carved and giltwood frames
A pair, both oil on canvas, in fine Venetian carved and giltwood frames

Condition

The catalogue illustrations are too pale and red in tone. Both canvas have fairly recently been relined and restretched. The paint surface of both appears to be very well preserved with much or if not all of the original impasto intact. There are two tiny old losses to the upper left and upper centre of the top picture. The only damage appears to be a narrow band old abrasion (?) running vertically down from the top edge to the tops of the heads of the soldiers in the centre of the same painting. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals no repair to this area however, and indeed later intervention appears to be confined to the most minor local spot, retouchings. The varnish layer is a little discoloured but remains even. The two Venetian giltwood frames remain in good condition.
