Description

  • The risen Christ flanked by Saints John the Evangelist, Dominic, Bernardino of Siena and Francis
  • Tempera and gold on panel, in an integral frame

Oil and gold on panel, possibly a predella

Condition

The support is stable and flat and unblemished apart from traces of an old horizontal crack in the lower right hand corner below Saint Francis. The paint surface is in good overall condition. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals some restoration to the dress of each of the four saints, and to the haloes and heads of Saints Bernardino and John and that of Christ. THis has been carefully carried out and is not visible to the naked eye. The background is generally well preserved with evidence of only local repair. The varnish remains reasonably clear and even. A few minor repaired old losses and chips to the frame.

Catalogue Note

This panel would probably have originally formed the predella of a small devotional altarpiece. The presence of Saints Dominic and Bernardino would suggest a possible Dominican commission.
