Description

  • Margherita Caffi
  • Still lifes of mixed flowers in urns and baskets
  • A pair, both oil on canvas
A pair, both oil on canvas

Condition

Both canvases have fairly recently been cleaned, relined, and restretched. Both are in very good overall condition with much original impasto preserved. Both canvases have an old 2cm extension to their top edge. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals selective strengthening to many of the shadows and the stems of some of the flowers in both paintings, but rather more so to the left hand still life, in particular in the lower left hand quarter of the picture where the blooms have also been reinforced. There are traces of blistering in the darks in the right hand picture but this is very minor. The restoration is well carried out and invisible to the naked eye and the varnish remains clear and even. Neither picture will acquire further attention. The gilt wood frames in the Venetian 18th Century style are in good condition with only a few minor chips.
