Catalogue Note
This dish belongs to the decoration called "assortimento a paesini e figure a smalto", as it was listed in the inventory manufactory in 1788, see R. Ausenda, Le fonti a stampa delle Maioliche di felice Clerici a paesini e figure a smalto, in rassegna di Studi e Notizie, Vol.XV, 1989-1990. pp.80-81.
The standing figure on the left of the central composition of this dish is sourced from a print and it is very similar to the one cut and painted from an engraving used to decorate an "Arte Povera" Lombard Bureau Cabinet in the Museo d'Arti Applicate, Milan. These prints sources were reinterpreted and taken to life by the talented painters, Giuseppe Sormani and Giacomo Fracchetti, listed in the Clerici's factory, as the decorations who "are painting with enamel colours" from 1756. An oval dish painted with a similar composition was sold by Sotheby's Milan, La Collezione Vivolo, November 13th, 2007, lot 35.
