Catalogue Note
Haufman designated this figure as Scapin but he could be also Mezzetin. Lately, Barbara Beaucamp-Markowsky suggested a comparison with Antoine Watteau's portrait of Nicolas Vleughels as a Persian. This would imply that this figure is more "a participant in an open-air party of gallants in Spanish or Oriental costumes rather than [a] masquerader of the commedia dell'arte".
