Catalogue Note

The Kloster-Veilsdorf factory's best achievement was the Commedia dell'Arte series modelled and painted by the "modellmeister" Wenzel Neu between 1763-1767. The number of figures created remains unfortunately unknown but it is known that they were after drawings by Johann Jacob Schlüber which had been engraved by Johnn Balthasar Probst and published in Augsburg in 1729, Amor vehementer quidem flagrans. After Neu's departure, a series of ten smaller Commedia dell'Arte figures was modelled in 1768, most figures being direct copies of the larger originals. For a full discussion, see Ralf-Jürgen Sattler," The Theatrical Figures from Closter Veilsdorf", in R. Jansen (ed.),op. cit, pp. 30-33.  For similar models, see M. Chilton, op. cit., fig. 67 and R. Jansen, op. cit., fig. 84.
