Catalogue Note
Reinicke's work records in June 1744 "1 Scaramuz in Thon Bossirt" (1 Scaramouche modelled in clay), which could be this model or the other one from the series - see lot 132. It is modelled after Joullain's engraving "habit de Scaramouche Napolitain".
Scaramouche was a Neapolitan valet, fond of the bottle, intrigue and women. "although he was a large eater, he was one of the most agile players ever seen... in character, he was extremely suspicious, miserly and hot-tempered." (Angelo Constantini, The Birth, Life and death of Scaramouche, Paris, 1697).
For a smilar model, see B. Abraham, op. cit., p. 64.
