Catalogue Note
This model is recorded in Reinicke's archives in March 1744 "I Pandelon in Thon reparirt" (1 clay Pandelon repaired). As Kändler mentions Pantalone in the same month, it may be that he started working on this model and then handed it over Reinicke, later correcting it again. For similar models, see R. Jansen, op. cit., fig. 42 and B. Abraham, op. cit., p. 64.
A Venetian merchant, the elderly and vain Pantalone was portrayed as a jealous cuckold or as an elderly father with a deceitful daughter whom he wished to marry off to his financial advantage. He was duped and ridiculed by his servants and family.
