One of the best-known illustrations in children's literature.
This is the first depiction of Winnie-the-Pooh and Christopher Robin and was reproduced on page xvi of Winnie-the-Pooh (Methuen, 1926) where is appears as a full-page illustration opposite the first page of text of chapter one.
In December 2008 Sotheby's sold in these rooms the companion piece from the end of the book, 'Bump, bump, bump - going up the stairs' ('That Sort of Bear' - E.H. Shepard's Winnie-the-Pooh, from the collections of Stanley J. Seeger and Christopher Cone, 17 December 2008, lot 19). The illustration sold for £97,250.
