Catalogue Note

Reproduced, as the twenty-third of twenty-eight colour plates, within Edgar Allan Poe's The Bells and other poems (Hodder and Stoughton, 1912). The drawing illustrates the poem 'Israfel':

"In Heaven a spirit doth dwell
'Whose heart-strings are a lute;'
None sing so wildly well
As the angel Israfel,
And the giddy Stars (so legends tell)
Ceasing their hymns, attend the spell
Of his voice, all mute.

Original labels from The Leicester Galleries exhibition are preserved on the frame backing.
