Condition
To the naked eye:
The painting appears in a favorable state of conservation. It is under a very dirty old varnish.
It has an old relining made a little strongly.
To the naked eye we see a uniform material, no visible restoration.
Under UV lamp:
The painting appears under a green uniform varnish. We notice some small retouchings in the lower right corner and in the foot of Bacchus. Some retouchings in Ariane's yellow drapery and in the trees in the upper left corner.

Catalogue Note
Notre tableau correspond très probablement au numéro 252b du catalogue de l'exposition Carle Vanloo. En effet les dimensions du tableau sont très proches de celle du nôtre et la description est assez convainquante: "Bacchus & Ariane dans l'Isle de Naxos; le Dieu porte un manteau de peau de tigre & la Princesse assise tient un Thyrse à la main : deux Amours, dont un la couronne, sont élevés sur sa tête; un troisième est à côté d'elle; on voit la mer dans l'éloignement." Cette description correspond en tout point avec notre tableau toutefois elle cite deux anges au-dessus de la tête de la Princesse alors que sur le tableau que nous présentons il n'y en a qu'un (sic).
Le n°253 du catalogue est un tableau de même sujet dont nous n'avons ni les dimensions ni le descriptif exact aussi, si notre tableau n'est pas le n°252b il peut très probablement être celui mentionné sous le numéro 253.
