Catalogue Note
Jérôme Daniel, frère de Jean-Baptiste Daniel, également peintre de grandes compositions religieuses et mythologiques, travailla autour de 1681 en Provence et plus particulièrement sur les chantiers des grands décors d'églises ou d'hôtels particuliers d'Aix. En effet la ville conserve L'Extase du bienheureux Elzéar de Sabran dans l'église de la Madeleine mais également la grande composition de Diane et Endymion ornant le plafond du boudoir de l'hôtel Grimaldi-Régusse (de Laurens). Par ailleurs, l'église Saint-Denis de Ventabren possède un tableau représentant La Vierge et plusieurs saints. A l'instar de ces exemples, notre tableau illustre parfaitement la qualité du travail de ce maître de la peinture baroque méridionale.
