Condition

The photography in the catalogue is slightly more red than the work itself. The work is in very good condition. A few minor tears have been restored along the edges, especially in the upper part

Catalogue Note

Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer se forma à l'Ecole Supérieure de Dessin et Sculpture de Paris. Après un premier séjour à Venise en 1895, il rentra à Paris  et exposa pour la première fois à la galerie Georges Petit en 1896.  Son talent fut découvert par l'écrivain symboliste belge Georges Rodenbach,qui aida Lévy-Dhurmer à diffuser ses oeuvres tant en France qu'en Belgique. Plus connu pour ses effets de sfumato au pastel, Lévy-Dhurmer utilise ici le lavis pour évoquer la luminosité brumeuse de la lagune dans un camaïeu sépia rappelant la photographie. Venise fascinait l'artiste qui se rendit plusieurs fois sur place. Un pastel représentant le même sujet a été vendu 36500 £ chez Sotheby's, le 14 novembre 2007.
