Catalogue Note

"During those same years [1944-1947], I showed the later work of the last of my Surrealist discoveries, Arshile Gorky, the painter now generally conceded to be the "eye-spring" of Abstract Expressionism. Andre Breton was the first to write of the quality of Gorky in a preface to my first exhibition of this extraordinary painter in 1945, "The Eye-Spring". Julien Levy, Memoir of an Art Gallery, New York, 1977, pp. 281-282.
