Condition

This bravura oversized print on matte-surface paper shows Bruehl at his photographic best, presenting an evocative and detailed image in a technically perfect print. The depth of the blacks in this image, and the intensity and detail in the mid-tones, are impressive. The image itself is in essentially excellent condition. There is a V-shaped area of original retouching below the right hand – this is also visible in a reproduction of another print of the image in the above-cited book, indicating that the retouching remedies a flaw in the negative. There is minor age-appropriate silvering on the print's extremities. This print is laid down to thick illustration board. Warm-toned glue remains on the print's margins, and the edges of the mount, indicate that an overmat was originally affixed to the print. This overmat, with Bruehl's signature in pencil, is now affixed to the back of the mat. In the cataloguing for this photograph in the Guggenheim catalogue of the Buhl Collection, this photograph is described as a silver bromide print.
