Condition
This wonderful, evocative platinum print is on Weston's characteristic large paper mount, and is signed in full, dated, and titled in pencil along the mount's lower edge. In terms of the image, which incorporates elements of both Pictorialism and Modernism, and its presentation, this photograph is a perfect example of Weston's work from the late teens and early 1920s.
The photograph is on warm-toned double-weight platinum paper. It has been affixed to the mount along the upper edge – some evidence of the glue on the reverse is very faintly visible along the upper edge of the image. There is an area around the base of the sitter's hand that shows the application of gouache or some other retouching. Similar, but fainter, retouching can be seen along the upper edge of the sitter's arm.
The mount shows some light soiling. On the reverse is a pencil drawing with a decidedly mystical character.
