Condition

This wonderfully surreal photomontage consists of three photographic components: the first is the photograph of the seashore, and the second and third are the figures of the men, which are glued onto the seashore photograph. Maar has cut and positioned the shapes of the men meticulously, creating the impression that these figures exist in this seashore scene. The whole work is in nearly excellent condition. Close examination in raking light shows some original retouching and some inconsequential flaws in the surface. But there is nothing that detracts from the overwhelmingly fine appearance of this collage.
