Condition
Partially laid down. Overall in very good condition. Some staining and discoloration at the left margin. The white heightening has slightly oxidised. Overall medium remains fresh and image strong.
Sold in a gilded frame.

Catalogue Note
Magnasco executed a series of drawings of angels appearing to figures in the desert and some of these works bear the lettering H followed by a number, similar to the H7 inscribed on the present drawing.1 It is unclear whether there was a particular coding for certain series of drawings, but the letter H is to be found on several of the works that represent angels appearing to single figures. It is most likely that Magnasco used these figure studies as examples that he could later incorporate into his painted compositions.
