Catalogue Note
This somewhat free copy after del Sarto's famous fresco of 1525 in the Chiostro dei Morti, Santissima Annunziata, Florence,1 was clearly executed by a northern artist working in Italy in the years around 1600. Although Rottenhammer spent most of his career in Venice, sylistically the drawing can be compared with certain works by him, such as the Raising of Lazarus, now at Chatsworth.2
