Catalogue Note
The present sheet, probably dating from Palma's mature period in the 1620s, is a highly finished composition. It is similar in style and technique to the preparatory drawing for The Madonna and Child in glory with angels, adored by St. Jerome, St. Stephen Pope, and St. Carlo Borromeo from the collection of Antonio Maria Zanetti the Elder.1 Like that, it was probably a preparatory study for a particular commission, but there is no record of a painting with this exact composition.
