Catalogue Note

The vigorous and energetic draftsmanship is characteristic of Gambara, as is the rather eccentric design of this vase and the lion itself.  A comparison can be made with the rendering of the shaggy legs of a satyr in one of his frescoes for the Palazzo Averoldi, Brescia. His major commissions were in Brescia, Asolo, Monza and Parma.  His style reflects the influence of the Campi and of Romanino (whose daughter he married), but his compositions are the product of a very original and individual personality.
