Catalogue Note

This drawing, which can be dated circa 1890-1985 is part of a series of drawings executed by Rodin called de transition. At this time Rodin used laid letter paper, often English in origin, which was sold pre-folded. Rodin cut this paper at the fold and then used only the half of the leaf. This treatment explains the truncation of the watermark and the crown visible in the present sheet when it is held up to the light.

Femme nue debout, passant un vêtement relates to several works in the collection of the Musée Rodin (including D. 4338). In all of these works the figure’s garment is extremely simplified to a geometric and minimal sack-like form. No watercolor is used in the drapery, alluding to a white fabric. Where the figure’s skin emerges from the garment, purple-pink watercolor is fluidly and vibrantly used. The body seems to be cut in two by the drapery: the lower part is still and static while the upper body, with its bent elbows, gives a sense of focus and energy.
