Condition

The board is sound. The impasto is fairly well preserved and the pigments are rich and vibrant. Some very minor losses to the extreme outer edges of the composition including the upper left edge. Some thin lines of stable cracking at bottom right corner. Some pindot losses have occured in places where the impasto is at its thickest. Under UV light certain pigments fluoresce and various scattered small strokes and small spots of inpainting are visible predominantely along the extreme edges of the composition but also within the lower sky at right. Overall this work is in generally good condition.

Catalogue Note

Coucher de soleil à Pittsburgh was executed during Maurice Denis' visit to North America in the early autumn of 1927. Denis has been invited to the United States by the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, where he was to serve on the Jury of Award for the 26th Carnegie International art exhibition.

Denis remained in Pittsburgh for only a few days. He spent a total of three weeks in North America visiting Washington and Boston before travelling north to Canada, where he spent a few days in Quebec, Montreal, and Ottawa. Only a handful of paintings by Denis can be dated to his brief American sojourn, including the present work.
