Catalogue Note
During his time in Italy, Degas was inspired not just by the storied works of the Old Masters but also by the daily life of those who surrounded him in the various cities and towns of Italy in which he lived and worked. Italienne is a lovely example of Degas's portraiture of the local people he encountered in his travels. His desire to study color and local costume is also apparent in this work.
“His stay in Italy had been eventful. Years later he told Valernes that it had been the most wonderful period in his life. He had seen much, made new friends and got to know his family in Naples and Florence…. Moreover…there were his impressive studies of old Roman women, a nude in the Von der Heydt Museum, Wuppertal, and portraits and oil studies of young Romans" (Denys Sutton, Edgar Degas, Life and Work, New York, 1986, p. 39).
