Catalogue Note
Mauro, the son of Gaetano Gandolfi, produced many studies of heads as did his father, and it is sometimes hard to differentiate between the two artists' work. However, this study is definitely from the hand of Mauro as he introduces a more neoclassical taste in his drawings, which is absent in Gaetano's work. The present example is comparable to a sheet of head studies sold London, Sotheby's, 8 July 2004, lot 106. These drawings were conceived as works of art in their own right and were sold to collectors and connoisseurs.
