Catalogue Note

As his drawings are so rare, there is little in the way of comparative material to help in fully understanding Guarana's technique.  A group of eight drawings was sold at Christie's in 19851 and it is from them that we gain the most information on his working method.  Two of the eight were purchased by the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and the recto of their Two Putti Supporting the Lower Part of a Draped Figure2 is similar to one of the groups of putti in the present drawing.

This design was probably intended to decorate a ceiling of a music room, as the majority of figures hold musical instruments.  Guarana completed a series of frescoes, including ceiling decorations, at the Villa Pisani at Strà, but we cannot, however, be sure that this was preparatory for those particular frescoes.
