Catalogue Note
Lorenzo went as a young boy to Würzburg to help his father and brother, and it was there that he learned his craft, making copies after his father's drawings. He returned to Venice in 1753 where he remained until he left for Spain in 1762. This drawing must date from those Venetian years as it still reflects the influence of his father and older brother, whereas the studies of heads made in Spain are bolder and more inventive. Lorenzo seems to have been by inclination a portrait painter and from his early years made pastel portraits. The charming study of a little girl on the verso is certainly drawn from life, and the head on the recto has an individuality which suggests the same. It is tempting to imagine that it might be a portrait of one of his sisters, who are known from the beautiful Tiepolo family portrait formerly in the Rosebery Collection.
Bernard Aikema, from an image, has confirmed the attribution to Lorenzo and considers this an early work by the artist.
