Catalogue Note

Though famous for his imaginary landscapes with ancient ruins and monuments, Hubert Robert was also a sharp observer and recorded real views enlivened by scenes of everyday life, especially of Rome and its surroundings.  It is probable that this very rare view of Giambologna's Fountain of Neptune in Bologna was drawn during his trip from Paris to Rome in 1754.  Bologna was a city that he would surely have visited.  The Fountain of Neptune, located in the eponymous square, Piazza Nettuno, next to Piazza Maggiore, is, however, only rarely depicted in a work of this period.  The bronze figure was completed by Giambologna about 1567.  In this lively watercolor Robert records figures and vegetable vendors fetching water from the basin of the fountain.
