Literature

Sardjana Sumichan, Affandi, Vol I, Singapore, 2007, p. 47, illustrated in colour

Condition

The work is in good condition overall. The canvas is taut. There are three minor flecks of paint loss on the middle left margin, the lower center, and middle. There are scattered faint craquelures on the impasto areas throughout but the paint is in stable condition. There is no apparent indication of retouching under ultraviolet light. The color is less overexposed than the catalogue illustration, especially in the background, where the white is creamier and overall the painting has a more golden undertone. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"...as his expressions gradually took shape, the images in his paintings emerge side by side with pure visual components. The images and the visual components – the strokes, the lines, the hand-scratches, the colours and the directly-applied paints – all form a totality that represents Affandi's energy, which emanated from within him when he was face-to-face with reality. What these images convey, therefore, are not messages; rather, it is power."
