Le Pho

The painting is in good condition overall, as is the silk, with no apparent runs. The paint layers are well preserved, apart from a faint discoloration on the lower right corner. There's a faint surface scratch on the upper edge and a faint linear surface scratch on the upper right (approximately 4 cm) and upper left (approximately 2.5 cm) quadrants in the background. Upon very close inspection faint foxing can be observed in the background, most notably on the lower right margin, but they are apparent only upon close inspection. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some scattered small spots of minor retouching, occurring mostly on the white portions (the clothes) and the lower left corner and upper middle margin. The colors are a little bit too overexposed in the catalogue illustration. In reality, the painting is stronger and more compelling and is warmer and more golden in tone, with the yellow undertones more prominent, particularly in the yellow scarf and the green sash, which is more lime green than mint green in reality. The railings are of deeper, richer jade green. The background is more misty and sublime. Framed, under glass.
