Catalogue Note
In the canon of Russian non-conformist art of the 1960s and 70s, the painting of Vladimir Weisberg stands out ideologically and qualitatively from that of his contemporaries. His delicate compositions, executed in a subtle palette of muted shades, have been compared to the still lifes of Giorgio Morandi. However the objects in Weisberg’s compositions seem to merge together in a painterly haze, as the artist strives to create a space which constructs itself, dissipating the objects within it.
The following works trace the development of the artist’s style and the metaphysical transformation of inanimate, geometrical forms as they fuse into each other, consumed by the light and half-shadows. These works are a study in anti-expression, and focus on the inward contemplation of objects within a complete harmony of space and colour.
