Catalogue Note

Annenkov first met Ravel in 1932 during a performance at the Opera Comique de Paris of Bronislava Nijinska's one-act ballet, Bolero. In his memoirs, the artist recalls how he sketched Ravel's portrait from the wings as he conducted the orchestra.

'After Ravel's death in 1937, I found the sketch I had made five years previously in my files, I drew over my faded pencil lines in ink to strengthen them. My portrait of Ravel is now in America, in the collection of the composer Dimitri Tiomkin' (G.Annenkov, idem, p.225).
