Catalogue Note

The Jewish philanthropist Issar Gurvich (1890-1974) owned an impressive collection of Russian art and regularly loaned his pictures for exhibition. He was a close friend of Zinaida Serebriakova, and her 1941 portrait of him was sold in these rooms in November 2008. Gurvich bequeathed part of his collection to her son, Alexander Serebriakov.
