Catalogue Note

Dowager Empress Maria Fedorovna had provided an education for Princess Stephanie Radziwill (the sitter of lot 105) and was elected godmother to her eldest daughter, Princess Marie Wittgenstein (1829-1897). The present portrait is said to have been a present from the Dowager Empress to her goddaughter on the occasion of Marie's christening. Marie went on to marry Chlodwig, 2nd Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1819-1901) who served as Chancellor of Germany and Prime Minister of Prussia.

Dawe's original bust portrait of Empress Maria Fedorovna wearing the Order of St Andrew hangs in The State Russian Museum, St Petersburg.
