  • height of cup: 8.4cm, 3 1/2 in.; diameter of saucer: 15.5cm, 6 1/8 in.
the cup supported on three feet, the white body painted with a portrait of Alexander I in an oval gilded frame, the interior decorated with a gilt foliate band; the saucer centred with a gilt Imperial eagle, with factory marks

A comparable cup and saucer produced by Gardner manufactory is in the collection of State Historical Museum, Moscow, illustrated in A. Gaydamak, Russian Empire, Trefoil Press, Moscow-Paris, 2000, p.116.

During the Napoleonic wars the popularity of Alexander I in Russia and in Europe was exceptionally high and according to the memoirs of his contemporaries he was regarded as the greatest hero of 1812.
