Catalogue Note

This charming spring landscape dates to Repin's time in Normandy in 1974 and his sojourn in the small village of Veules on France's Atlantic coast.  Reminiscent of his native 'Little Russia', the new environment had an invigorating effect on the artist's painting. In one of his letters to Vladimir Stasov, Repin wrote, 'we live the countryside now, it's so simple, ravishing and lulls me like an old nanny'. Repin worked tirelessly, producing many plein air sketches, such as the present lot, which are characterised by their fresh palette and dynamic brushwork.

It was in Normandy that Repin painted one of his best-known compositions from this period, The Fisher Girl  (1874, Irkutsk Fine Art Museum), which is set against a background the long grasses and bright crimson poppy flowers which form the object of study in the offered lot.

Road through a Dell is believed to have been sold by Repin's daughter Tatiana Yazeva in Czechoslovakia in the1930s, along with a group of her father's works. Elena Kirillina, specialist at the Repin museum in Penates, believes the present lot appears in the list of sold works under the title Ravine (Ovrag), and that Vladimir Fiala gave it a more specific name when compiling his catalogue.
