Condition

Paul The vellum has been fairly well preserved. There is a light layer of surface dirt. There appears to be some restoration to the sitter's face. There are some minor surface scratches to the paint surface. The colours are fairly fresh. Held in a gold painted frame with mouldings. Unexamined out of frame. Maria Fedorovna There are pinholes to the edges. The sheet is slightly undulated. There is a light layer of dirt. There appears to be some restoration to the sitter's face and chest. UV light confirms further areas of restoration to the sitter's dress and background.There is a minor scratch to the right side and further minor scuffs in places elsewhere. Held in a gold painted frame with mouldings. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

Gilbert Romme (1750-1795), a French politician and mathematician.  spent five years in Russia from 1783-88, during which time he was the tutor to Count Pavel Stroganov (1774 –1817). Following Catherine II's death in 1796, Stroganov became Chamberlain to Paul I. According to family tradition, the offered portraits were a gift from Stroganov to Romme.
