Catalogue Note
In addition to supplying silver for various Imperial commissions via the firm of Nichols & Plinke, Karl Tegelstein (1798-1852, also spelled Carl Tegelsten) operated a bronze foundry that supplied many of the magnificent gilded chandeliers now hanging in the Hermitage Museum. Little is known about the foundry and works attributed to it rarely appear on the market. Nichols & Plinke retailed furniture made by many of St. Petersburg's finest gilt bronze manufacturers and this table likely was offered through their fashionable "Magasin Anglais."
