the removable lithophane with images after Franz Krüger's popular portraits with the Imperial crown above and the Imperial State Seal below, impressed K.P.M. 182 St., the gilt bronze stand in Neoclassical taste, with adjustable candelarm with two nozzles, raised on three paw feet on a triangular base, the base apparently unmarked

the gilt bronze stand with some losses and with a slight bend to one side; the lithophane with some small discolorations on the reverse

Catalogue Note
Baron Paul Charles de Bourgoing (1791-1864) invented and patented the process of producing lithophanes, panels of unglazed porcelain delicately modeled to create a realistic image when light traveled through it, but the very best examples, like the offered lot, were produced at Berlin's Royal Porcelain Manufactory. The portraits of the Prussian-born Empress Alexandra and her husband after originals by a renowned Berlin-based painter were a natural subject for the factory's modelers.
