Condition
The painting, in a very good condition, is slighlty dirty and will just respond to a light cleaning.
There is an horizontal thin dirt stain at the right of the woman's mouth, which is visible on the catalogue illustration. There are also a few tiny white stains in the lower left corner.
The paint layer is thin and the painting has not been varnished.

Catalogue Note
Elève de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Saint Pétersbourg, Roubtzoff obtient le Grand Prix en 1912, et se voit octroyer une bourse de voyage de quatre ans. Après un séjour en Espagne et en France, il s’installe définitivement en Tunisie en 1914. Fasciné par la qualité de la lumière et l’hospitalité de la population, il devient un observateur attentif de la vie quotidienne qu’il s’attache à peindre sans relâche. L’artiste cherche à cerner les moindres détails des modèles qu’il rencontre : attitude, bijoux, costumes ou encore tatouages typiques de la culture bédouine. Le portrait de cette femme tunisienne pilant du piment participe de cet intérêt pour les aspects les plus simples de la vie domestique. Se laissant facilement portraiturer, ces femmes bédouines sont très présentes dans l’œuvre de l’artiste, le plus souvent représentées de face, et parées de nombreux bijoux.
