Après son séjour à l’école des Beaux-Arts dans l’atelier de Merson, Henri-Jean Pontoy découvre l'Afrique du Nord en 1926 grâce à une bourse de la Société Coloniale des Artistes Français. L’artiste s’établit ensuite comme professeur des arts et lettres à Fès. Il expose notamment au Salon d’Automne, ainsi qu’au Salon des Artistes Orientalistes Algériens.
Ce tableau illustre le goût de Pontoy pour les scènes de la vie quotidienne marocaine, dans un paysage dominé par la majestueuse architecture d’une forteresse. La touche vive de l’artiste, associée aux jeux de couleurs et de lumière, traduit parfaitement la sensation de chaleur et l’environnement luxuriant de l’oued.
