This amazing portrait is in overall good condition, with a beautiful frame.
Under UV light, we can observe a network of crackes next to the right profile of the woman, which has been retouched. There are also small repaints at the upper right corner.

Catalogue Note
Frederick-Arthur Bridgman arrive en France à l’âge de 19 ans, et intègre l’atelier de Gérôme à l’école des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Son style subit une profonde mutation à la suite d’un séjour en Algérie en 1871. Il se consacre alors exclusivement à l’Orientalisme, puisant son inspiration en explorant les environs d’Alger, le Sud du pays ainsi que l’Egypte.
Notre tableau traduit l’influence prépondérante de Gérôme sur son élève, tant par la thématique, inspirée de certains portraits représentant les femmes issues du harem royal de Constantinople, que par la présentation frontale et le raffinement des vêtements (Voir l'illustration ci-dessous). Le jeu de contraste lumineux entre le fond sombre de la toile et le costume flamboyant du modèle est aussi inspiré du maître, renforçant la présence du modèle et l’intensité de son regard.
