Catalogue Note
Fils d’une longue lignée de graveurs, Eugène-Alexis Girardet débute sa formation au sein de l’atelier de Jean-Léon Gérôme à l’école des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Fasciné par l’imagerie et la poésie des œuvres orientalistes de son maître, Girardet part pour l’Algérie et commence à peindre les paysages désertiques et la vie des populations nomades, comme dans la Caravane dans les dunes de Bou-Saada conservée au musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes. Notre tableau s’inscrit pleinement dans cette thématique, représentant un chemin à flanc de colline, emprunté par un troupeau de moutons et divers personnages. La composition s’ouvre sur un vaste paysage, dans une atmosphère lumineuse à la fois douce et aride.
