Condition

The surface of the work is in generally good condition, apart from paint losses most evident at the lower edge of the plate and comprising a few small nicks to the rim of the plate and cracking of the paint surface. Further tiny paint losses scattered around the rim of the plate and near the right edge at center where there are two further small cracks to the surface. There are areas of apparent craquelure in the dog's beard and in the backgound around its head in particular upper left where there is a thick, uneven varnish. Under UV light: scattered areas of inpainting throughout the subject, the largest of which is in the darkest area to the left of its mouth; further inpainting is mostly confined to the edges of the plate to address previous losses, in particular at upper left.
