Condition

The canvas is lined. The canvas undulating slightly and separating from its lining, especially at the top. The surface of the work is in fair condition. The paint surface bubbling and breaking in several areas, especially in the sky and at bottom right. Frame abrasion visible along the edges of the canvas. Under UV: an old thick varnish with old repaint possibly underneath. Newer repaint in the lower left quadrant and sky addressing tears. Head of the dog approximately 30 percent repainted. Maggs: Signed J.C. Maggs and dated 1863 lower left. 19 by 23 3/4 in.; 48.3 by 60.4 cm. The surface of the work is in good condition, with thick varnish throughout.
