The canvas has a stiff lining. Although the work is framed as a tondo, the stretcher is square. The surface of the work is in generally good condition, with fine pressed craquelure, most apparent in the white dog, and a dry, scuffed varnish. Some pigment separation over the back of the dog, and evidence of an attempt to address it. Selective cleaning of the dog's face. Stretcher marks. Under UV: An old thick green varnish, possibly masking older generations of repaint. Scattered inpainting on top of the varnish, in particular around the white dog, heaviest at left around its tail.
