Condition

The canvas is lined. The surface of the work is in good condition. Stretcher bar marks, and pressed craquelure throughout, with possible repaint and a thick varnish. The edges probably repainted to treat frame abrasion, particularly along the bottom edge. Miniature Pinscher: signed A Clark and dated 1847 lower right. 15 3/8 by 18 in.; 39 by 45.7 cm. The canvas is unlined. Holes and tears to the surface of the work include a small hole and tear near the top edge at center, a further tear along the left edge, at least three repaired holes and small tears at right. Stretcher bar marks. Frame abrasion. Pressed craquelure throughout with some pigment separation especially in the lower half of of the canvas, and a few scattered tiny losses. Surface soiling. The varnish with a grainy texture, cloudy in places.
